Hi there !
I think it's a good thing that this forum has a section where everyone who is able to speak English can say something.
But I must confess :
I can't say very much here, because the talking is all about roller-coasters and such things.
Of course, that's the main topic here, but it's just TOO difficult for some people (including me) to talk about coasters in English,
especially, when you talk about coasters I can't even say anything about in German.
In the German section in this forum, there is a place where people talk about things like music, free-time activities and so on.
Maybe we could just open a thread just like that in the English section, because I'd really like to talk to people from other countries.

Has anyone an idea for a good topic here ?

Hello rcmania,

since we don't have started yet with
sections, feel free to post your thoughts
just here. Just as necessary!

When it get's confusing we'll open up
the single topics like in the German
section. S

Surely everyone is welcome to mention
which topic he/her would like to have
created in the international section!

Best Regards!

Well, for starters Eric, I notice on your avatar you have a picture of a sportbike... do you ride?

I'm saving up to get maybe a 600 CC Honda or Kawasaki (haha, well... basically anything I can afford that looks pretty cool). But insurance is still really really expensive in Canada until you're 25, espically if you buy a bike. S But I think it'd be worth it.

Hi Ian,

yes I'm riding a Yamaha TDM-900 which is a
mixture between a sportsbike and enduro.
(comparing the height of the seat)

You find some nice pics. and infos:
yamaha-motor-europe.com

Actually I'm riding motorcycles for about 14 years
now, starting with a small 50ccm Honda MBX at the
age of 16.

Since last week I've noticed some pics and infos
about the new Yamaha Fazer 600, a modell which
I also owned some years ago in 1999-2001.

All I can say wow, yummy what a smart bike!
Even the '99 modell was absolutely handy and powerful,
though for my size(200cm) it looked a bit small at the
side-view.

Those are awesome pictures in that second link... now I have a new wallpaper. S

I guess part of the frustration for me is I don't know how to get started. (Where to look for a bike, how to learn to ride, how to meet other people who are into riding in my area...)

@Ian

I recommend to start with the license
and how to ride. S

While learning how to ride you'll also
learn to know about your type. S

You'll easily find out which bike you
prefer, most important is to get a feeling
how and what to ride. S

e.g.
At my first driving-lesson for a bike, which
I did on a chopper S , I directly know this is
not my type. S

When participating my following lessons I
directly felt that I prefer agile bikes more
the highspeed. All the bikes I had since
then were agile sport-touring bikes and
enduros.

Regarding learning people to know, maybe you have
also special meeting places for bikers in Canada.

In Germany those special cafés and meeting places
are quiete popular with the bikers. My home-café
for example is called the "Café Hubraum", it very
popular with bikers in the range of 50-100km. On
a sunny sunday-morning you can easily see 500 bikers
of all different categories there.

Be sure, if you should ever travel on German roads
with a bike you're welcome! It's maybe not that near
from Toronto OK, but worth the landscape anyway!
S

@nalogo
By definition of his wallpaper it's maybe at least
a "chain-coaster" S which is displayed
on Ian screen, since the Yamaha FZ6 is driven by
a chain!

The part where I get confused is this... to get your licence, you have to have a bike.

To ride a bike, you have to have a licence.

But I can't go out and shop for a bike, if I don't know how to ride... and I can't learn how to ride until I get a bike and a licence!

S

I think there are a lot of bike enthusiasts in Canada for sure, but I'm still a little nervous. Because they are all gonna look down on me as the guy who doesn't know anything...

Seems things in Canada are different from what they are over here.
In Germany everyone can buy a bike, as long as he can pay for it. You can even get a licence plate for it without a proper drivers licence. You are just not allowed to ride it.

Also you can have a drivers licence without even having a bike...

Howdy Ian,

it seems like there are great differencies between Canada
and Germany. We have special driving schools and they also
equip a learner with a vehicle. No matter if you want to ride
a car, bike, truck or bus. If something happens there's a special
insurence that will cover the costs for a crash.

How would it be if we all need to use our own vehicle in Germany
for the period of learning and the final driving test.

I guess there would be many heavy excidents especially
with bikes, and to imagine that a newbie will have his first
crash with his own bike before having a license doesn't sound
funny to me. S

Other countries = other habits as we say in Germany!
I heard that in Egypt it's enough to drive a car forward
and backward for getting a license, but maybe it's only
a legend. S

How about the manufactors in Canada do they offer a training?
I guess it should be in there interests that riders are knowing
how to handle a bike?

In U.K. they this "L" sign for learner's and the parents of a newbie
are allowed to train, at least it was so when I went to school. S
But actually I don't know how they learn riding bikes in U.K.

Cars, trucks and busses the driving schools use also have a second set of pedals for the instructor, so he can react if the learner doesn't.
Of course this won't work for bikes, since the instructor usually follows the learner on a second bike or by car, while they can talk over a radio connection.

In some movies from the US I have also seen driving school cars, that also had a second steering wheel - I don't know if this was just a joke for that film, or if something like that really exists.

That is something I'd really like to have here, but I don't think it exists for bikes. I'll have to look into it.

When I was learning to drive I went to a driving school, it's optional in Canada if you want to just take the test and learn from your parents, or go to a driving school.

If you go to a driving school recognized by the Ministry of Transportation, then you can get your full car licence in 20 months instead of 24 (we have many different classifications of licences, for cars it's G class). G-1 is the class of licence for learning (you must drive with someone who has their full licence for at least 4 years), G-2 comes after that, then finally G (full licence).

For M-class (motorcycle) you do 2 months with many restrictions (M-1 licence), then at the end of that you can take a driving test and get your full M-class licence. So to get the M-1 it sounds quite easy... it's all on paper.

Herr Rossi In U.K. they this "L" sign for learner's and the parents of a newbie
are allowed to train, at least it was so when I went to school. S

Yeah, when I was learning to drive you have to put a green "N" sign that comes from the Ministry of Transportation to tell other drivers that you're learning to drive. People were a lot nicer then. S
